Marcel Mouly:
The Last of the
Picasso Protégés
On January 7, 2008 we
lost one of the most talented
artists of our time,
Marcel Mouly. At his
death, he was the last
living protégé of Picasso.
Known for his use
of bold color and abstract
impressions, Mr.
Mouly was also heavily influenced by Matisse
and Braque. He was close to the great sculptor,
Jacques Lipchitz, as well..
Born in Paris (1918), Marcel was acknowledged
as one of the most outstanding contemporary artists
of our century, whose unique style is immediately
recognized around the world. He first began
to show his work publicly in 1935 and continued
to do so until his recent death. Although Moulyʼs
work spanned over seven decades, his brilliance
peaked during his eighties, according to many of
his fans.
Marcel Mouly has exhibited his collections around
the world. In 2000, he hosted one of his last exhibitions
at the Park West Gallery (Michigan).
His passion and vibrancy at 81 years of age, were
quite evident. Many attendees noticed that he
easily surpassed their energy level. Mouly toured
the entire gallery and generously shared his time
and expertise with all. He seemed to experience
great joy when talking with a couple who had
purchased one of his works. As he signed the artwork,
Mouly said that this was his favorite from
all his collections and talked about his inspiration
for the piece. This exhibition was a memorable
experience for all who attended.
So, in tribute to his ability to touch lives, his
breathtaking views of the world, and his inspiration
to all – we bid a fond farewell to Marcel
Mouly (1918-2008).
